More often than not, software upgrades include a move into the cloud. At the same time, it's less common to hear about software upgrades that take us offline, or out of the cloud, to work on our desktops. Still, there is a strong need for this service because certain organizations prefer to handle their data outside of a cloud environment. Responding to this need, Trimble TerraFlex software now enables users to work offline.
TerraFlex software, a cloud-based solution for streamlining data collection workflows, now enables users to transfer and post-process their data without the use of Trimble cloud services. Additionally, users can synchronize data directly to their Esri GIS using Trimble Positions Desktop add-in for Esri ArcGIS Desktop, a software solution that extends ArcGIS Desktop for managing high-accuracy GNSS data collection workflows using Trimble field software.
So, who needs to work offline? What is the Trimble Positions Desktop add-in? And how do you gain access to the latest TerraFlex software? Here’s what you need to know.
Users Can Disconnect from the Cloud
Many industry sectors, including government, utility providers, and oil and gas companies, have mandated security requirements around the use of cloud-based solutions. The new TerraFlex offline data transfer capabilities allow those users to utilize the solution without storing any geospatial feature data in the cloud.
“There are a lot of federal and state government agencies with strict controls defined in legislation about what sort of data can go into a cloud environment,” said Hamish MacMillan, Trimble product manager. “Organizations wanting to provide solutions to those users have to respect that, and meet their cloud security requirements, or work disconnected from the cloud.”
In addition, there is another group of users who simply prefer to work offline. These users are not yet ready to move to the cloud and many work with Trimble’s Mapping & GIS legacy software products. Enabling an offline TerraFlex workflow allows legacy users to switch to a more modern solution but with a data transfer workflow they are already familiar with.
“Many legacy users have had these file-based systems that have worked for them the past 15 years,” says MacMillan. “They trust that process. It works for them, and they want to continue. That’s what we’re enabling with this offline workflow.”
How Offline Data is Processed
The new workflow is possible through an integration between TerraFlex and the Trimble Positions Desktop add-in for Esri ArcGIS Desktop. TerraFlex field data collected with a Trimble GNSS receiver is post-processed directly inside the Trimble Positions Desktop add-in for improved positional accuracy.
