Trimble Software: Working With Large Datasets 4 Scan Density Example 1: Floor plans are needed to derive the ceiling heights for each room on each floor of a building. To determine the heights a density of 10 mm @ 10 m is more than enough, even if the instrument can scan at higher densities. Scanning at less than the maximum possible density results in faster field collection, quicker uploads, and less time needed to produce the deliverables, and speeds up archiving and downloading shared data. Lower density scans are usually sufficient for creating the CAD line work for floor plans: The desired end result is the floor plan with ceiling heights:
