Thisauto-calibrationprocedurecomeswithmultipleadvantages.Thefirstbeingthatbecausethe technologyforthealidade'sencodersystemisadoptedfromtotalstations,theprecisionisalready downtolessthan3"(arcseconds)andprovidesconfidencethatthescannerheadwillbeproperly calibratedateachindividualdeflectionunitencoderpositionforbothhorizontalandvertical collimationerror.Theprocedurealsoaccountsforallremainingalignmentdeviationsinsidethe scanneraswellasdeflectionunitencodererrors.Forexample,inthecasethattheEDMbeamand thedeflectionunitrotationaxesarenotidentical,thescanningplanewillnotbeperfect,butrather slightlybent.
