The Trimble Tunneling software system including TBC and Trimble Access, allows you to import design files from third-party software such as IFC, CAD and LandXML formats. Whether in the field or office, you can update designs on the fly and synchronize the new design for field crews for use in real-time. The latest software versions of Trimble Access and TBC, both released in October 2023, now support reverse arcs in tunnel designs allowing for streamlined execution of Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) tunnel projects and simplified reporting on construction tolerances.

Further enhancing the design capabilities of the software, pipe umbrellas, also called canopy tubes, can be input and automatically staked in Access, allowing you to position and orient the drilling jumbo to ensure piles are driven in the correct direction and position.

Oftentimes, the design data provided to tunnel survey teams need to be manipulated into a usable model for stakeout and as-built. Now, in conjunction with the Cutting Plane Tool, 2D and 3D CAD models can be easily converted into a full 3D tunnel model using the Create Tunnel Shape from CAD command.

Statistics and Reporting Deliverables 

Expanded statistics and reporting on tunnel verification and construction 

TBC and Trimble Access software provide statistics and reporting capabilities integral to the success of a tunneling project. By leveraging these tools, tunnel verification and construction reporting become a far more precise and insightful process.

The Trimble Access field software is designed to collate and present real-time data from the field, giving you an instant view of the tunnel construction progress. In the latest release, you can perform fast comparisons of design to as-built and as-built to as-built, highlighting out-of-tolerance areas from mis-blasts, under excavation and under spraying of shotcrete. Leverage the Transparent Color Map setting to hide in tolerance areas so easily target ‘hot spots’ in the scan inspection. 

Similarly, TBC provides comprehensive reporting features, enabling you to analyze and visualize data in detail and prepare a final deliverable for your client. TBC v5.90 adds enhanced statistics to the tunnel as-built reporting to demonstrate quality conformance for shotcrete and secondary lining checks.

The integration of these software tools with the Trimble SX12 scanning total station—a device known for its high-quality scanning performance—means the data used for statistics and reporting is incredibly precise. TBC allows you to create customizable deliverables for every phase of construction, from initial design to as-built models. Whether you need 3D as-built models of the constructed tunnel, point cloud data, 2D and 3D CAD as-built drawings, or detailed reports on construction tolerances, the deliverables can be tailored to meet your client’s specific requirements. Recently, TBC introduced a Tunnel Set Out Points report which is useful for validating as-built rockbolt, anchor, mesh, arch and formwork supports.

TBC also offers a Geological Overbreak Report to document overbreak conditions according to Swiss Norm SIA198 standards, providing contractors additional information that provides even more confidence in the tunnel design and build.

Additionally, the Tunnel Undulation Report provides an analysis of as-built tunnel information on the smoothness or waviness of the tunnel utilizing the bar length and waviness criteria. This data can be then be translated into the field using tabular information detailing offsets and stationing.

Also newly available in TBC is the ability to automatically generate 2D and 3D CAD as-built drawings to provide yet another deliverable option for your client. This reduces the time to deliver to clients and helps feed the digital twin of tunnel construction projects with accurate and comprehensive data.
