A field manager visits a site where new pipes have been installed underground. He needs to survey the pipe in the trench. The purpose is to map the pipe with 10 cm accuracy so as to locate it later for repairs, design future infrastructure, map it for regulatory reasons, and to find valves in case of an incident quickly, even under snow.
The pipe is in a forest environment. If a pipe corner is positioned under a tree, the Geo 7X with laser rangefinder can be used where GNSS signals are not available for decimeter accurate positioning. This saves having to call in a surveyor or using a meter tape.
As well as surveying the position of the pipe and other features like valves and manholes, additional information such as diameter, material, and depth can be collected and photos taken for documentation. The data dictionaries are complex and, depending on feature attributes, are presented to fill in depending on conditions.
Back in the office the data needs to be postprocessed for quality control and to fill gaps where real time was not available due to missing cell phone coverage in remote locations. The data is quality checked to ensure the required accuracy was achieved and then exported into the customer’s database.
