TBM As-Built Scan

This Trimble Business Center project demonstrates how to perform automatic geo-referencing and classification using SX10 scans for TBM tunnel as-built verification.

One of the most common tunnel construction methods is by Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). These tunnels create circular profiles that are reinforced by concrete segments. Surveyors are tasked with collecting as-built data to verify the position and shape relative to the design alignment. This process can be time consuming using conventional total station measurements.

With the Trimble SX10, tunnel surveyors can benefit from total station capabilities supplemented with 3D laser scanning detail. For TBM tunnels this means that surveyors can perform standard resections to reference the instrument to the tunnel coordinate system and then perform scans.

Back in the office, the TBC Tunneling module automatically geo-references and classifies the scan data, drastically reducing the technician’s time by removing the need for tedious clean up and registration. From here, as-built reports can be created to verify the tunnel built position to design alignment position.
