How a Swedish metrology company harnessed Trimble Connect to streamline workflows
When Joseph Torres demonstrates the power of Trimble® Connect, a cloud-based common data environment (CDE) and collaboration platform, to his customers, there’s often a "wow" moment when they realize the easy access to data, transparency and time savings. “Most people think it's great and easy to use. The visualization makes it easy to understand how the final product will be,” he explains.
Torres and his business partner, Suleyman Budak, own Mät Mer Sthlm AB, a Swedish surveying company specializing in the scientific study of measurement. The company provides metrology services to a wide range of clients, including construction and civil engineering firms, municipalities, private individuals and even the Church of Sweden. Mät Mer Sthlm AB has integrated Trimble Connect into their workflow to streamline operations, drive efficiencies and enhance data transparency across the entire work environment.
For Torres and his team, Trimble Connect offers significant advantages by enabling real-time data transfer between devices and PDAs used in the field with those in the office. This seamless data flow eliminates the need for extensive data preparation and processing, which is a cumbersome task.
“Previously, a lot of data preparation was done. Data/files were transferred to controllers who then went out and did the work. Later you had to come back to the office, transfer data again, and then process the data,” Torres explains. “Now you can cut a few steps by using Trimble Connect as a platform.”
The result? Enhanced collaboration with satisfied clients
Trimble Connect also serves as a crucial platform for collaboration with clients. By sharing data and documentation through Trimble Connect, clients have easy access to all necessary information. Clients can log in to Trimble Connect via their desktop app or the web to view, annotate, measure and create cross-sections of the data.
“We have a Trimble Connect subscription (Connect Business for Trimble Access) and we can invite external parties who create a Trimble ID, free of charge,” he said. “We provide this solution for the customer and share the data that way.”
Torres notes that most clients find Trimble Connect user-friendly and appreciate the ease of visualization it offers. While some clients are initially hesitant due to the fast-paced nature of their projects, they quickly adapt to the platform's simplicity. “Trimble has done very well creating as simple of a solution as possible, which means that you can easily get into [Trimble Connect] and then start working almost from day one,” says Torres.
A stellar view
In the field, Trimble Connect proves invaluable, especially in machine control, says Torres. He recalls an example from a project at Stockholm Bypass, where Trimble Connect was used to share models and updates with supervisors, project managers and other stakeholders. The platform ensured that everyone had access to the latest information, creating a single source of truth.
“We used the Trimble Connect platform to share information within the project,” he says. “Then supervisors, project managers and those who were invited could share the data with the latest models and new updates.”
The Stockholm Bypass Entreprenad 309-project involved the construction of approximately three kilometers of road and infrastructure, including bridges, traffic areas, ramps, tunnel surcharge and a new tunnel tube next to the existing Lindö Tunnel. Torres and his team used Trimble Connect to scan the tunnel with the Trimble SX12 total station, processed the point cloud in Trimble Business Center office software and exported an as-built tunnel mesh for use in Trimble Connect.
This is only a sample of the various tools and visualizations enabled by Trimble Connect, such as creating cuts in models, adding textures and changing lighting and shading, says Torres. These features allow for realistic views and effective communication with project stakeholders.
