What Can Spatial IT Do for You?

2 minute read

There’s been much written about spatial IT -- particularly building information modeling (BIM) -- and its tremendous power to drive efficiencies in infrastructure construction and development.

If you have been reading about this technological potential but are still trying to figure out exactly how it applies to your daily work and building projects, it might be helpful first to define the concept. A definition from xyHt Editor Gavin Schrock is a good start:

Spatial IT: The digital elements that support and enable geospatial sciences, data-capture technologies, data management and analysis, and the utilization thereof in planning, designing, building, and managing physical infrastructure and location-based applications.

Spatial IT workflow advances have significant potential to impact the entire design, build and operate project lifecycle. Some advantages include:

  • Productivity boost
  • Reduction in construction costs
  • Fewer errors and rework
  • Accelerated project time to completion

It’s clear that spatial IT can drive efficiencies in infrastructure construction and development. It’s also an opportunity for surveyors to demonstrate their value in BIM and grow their services and businesses.

Yet, many geospatial professionals are still learning how to start making it a reality in their daily operations and strategic planning.

If you want to learn more about proving true value to your project stakeholders – and showing them how they can realize gains and ROI throughout the building lifecycle – check out this recent article by Boris Skopljak in xyHT, “What Can Spatial IT Do for You?” here.
