Frequently asked questions
The term "semi-automated" refers to campaign-based or periodic monitoring projects that require less frequent measurements, and are usually in lower risk environments, than fully automated projects. "Automated" monitoring refers to having permanently installed sensors such as total stations, GNSS or other measurement sensors permanently installed on site. The more your setup progresses towards automation, the more you can reduce the chance of measurement errors and the need for site visits.
Survey, geotechnical and structural engineers can seamlessly expand their monitoring business opportunities with a comprehensive system that incorporates data from geodetic sensors such as a total station, GNSS and level, as well as geotechnical sensors like extensometers, tiltmeters and weather stations. All of this can be viewed and analyzed in Trimble 4D Control™ (T4D).
Trimble total stations are ideal for monitoring projects. The SX12 scanning total station and the S9 and S7 robotic total stations can be operated remotely and programmed to automatically measure control points and targets. Real-time measurements can be sent directly into Trimble 4D Control software for automatic reporting and alerts.
The Settop M1 monitoring controller enables remote management and control of Trimble total stations for real-time monitoring projects. When combined with T4D software, the controller creates a continuous and robust automated movement detection solution that supports data analysis, reporting and timely alerts.

T4D allows for automated scheduling of SMS or email report notifications and alarms to ensure stakeholders receive and can act on timely notices that are relevant to their roles. Conditional alarming allows you to combine different data types, use scalable mathematical operations or specify the different threshold levels—attention, warning and alarm—for a customized comprehensive monitoring software.
